As the world spins more and more for trendy social media apps and accounts to commercialize as much of Life as possible, we’ve gotten away from the true and intrinsic values of Creativity and what it means to be Human within Creativity. While so many nowadays are caught up in trying their best to just survive, the ability to find time to create feels something like a luxury. Here are my tips for artists to manage themselves and enhance their creative journey:
1. Cultivate a Daily Creative Practice:
Follow the principle of making creativity a part of your daily routine. Set aside dedicated time each day for artistic exploration, whether it's drawing, writing, painting, or any other medium. By consistently engaging in your creative practice, you'll sharpen your skills, uncover new ideas, and foster a habit of productivity.
2. Prioritize Personal Growth:
Continuously invest in your personal growth and development as an artist. Seek out workshops, courses, and mentorship opportunities to expand your knowledge and skills. Read books, attend exhibitions, and engage with other artists to broaden your artistic perspective. By committing to lifelong learning, you'll continually evolve as an artist.
3. Maintain a Balanced Life:
Strive for a healthy work-life balance, as emphasized in both books. Dedicate time not only to your artistic pursuits but also to self-care, relationships, and leisure activities. Remember that creativity is fueled by diverse experiences and a well-rounded life. Avoid burnout by setting boundaries and ensuring you have time for rest and rejuvenation.
4. Embrace Collaboration and Community:
Artists often thrive in supportive communities. Seek opportunities to collaborate with other artists, join art groups, or participate in workshops and exhibitions. Surrounding yourself with like-minded creatives can provide inspiration, feedback, and networking possibilities. Building meaningful connections within the artistic community can fuel your motivation and open doors for new opportunities.
5. Practice Effective Time Management:
Drawing from other principles, manage your time effectively by prioritizing your creative tasks and setting clear goals. Utilize tools such as calendars, to-do lists, and project management apps to stay organized. Break your creative projects into smaller, manageable tasks, and set deadlines for yourself. By practicing effective time management, you'll stay focused, increase productivity, and make progress on your artistic goals.
Remember, managing oneself successfully as an artist is an ongoing process. Continually refine your approach, experiment with new techniques, and adapt as you grow and evolve as an artist.
I help others find ways to be creative despite their comfort levels. Technology and social media have made it easier for people to claim they're creators, but I have reservations about who I consider truly creative. I learned from "Steal Like An Artist" that originality isn't always original, as we're all influenced by others' creativity. Personal leadership is essential to being an artist, as it involves carving out a unique space for yourself and having self-confidence, introspection, vision, and openness. As an African American man, I understand the challenges of navigating resource-deprived environments and societal conditions. I've had to develop personal leadership to succeed in my endeavors. As a husband and father, I've managed to be both a blue-collar employee and a white-collar entrepreneur without a college degree, and I understand the importance of individuals like myself in those roles.
